Design
Although they have a slightly more modern touch, the OneOdio Monitor 80 or M80 have a similar design to the OneOdio M60. The casing is made from black colored plastics, along with some silver accents, giving them a specific classic look.
They smell a bit of plastic out of the box, and you can tell that the construction is not high-end. Something understandable if we take into account that these are studio headphones that cost less than 100 USD. Still, the build quality is decent overall, and it has some lovely details.
The headband has an aluminium mechanism with well-marked steps. The glide is somewhat less smooth than other earphones, but it holds the position securely, vital.
We can swing the cups horizontally and vertically, which allows us to adjust the headphones to the shape of our heads perfectly. The mechanisms work well and have a fair degree of smoothness; however, the vertical oscillation mechanism on the left earcup makes some noise when moving it. In my case, it only sounds when we move them; once we put them on the head, it doesn’t sound at all, so it doesn’t bother too much, although it is a flaw that makes us notice that the build quality could be improved.
Comfort
The padding is perfect. The headband has excellent padding, The M80 cups have very generous foam padding covered in velvet. In addition, the cups are huge to envelop even the largest ears. The result is excellent in terms of comfort. I have also not noticed that the ears get too hot, so they seem to be quite breathable.
Of course, due to the generous size of the cups and padding, the M80 is large and bulky headphones. The good thing is that the weight does not get out of control and remains below 300 grams.
The inside of the cups is enormous and circular. My ears do not touch anything at all, so the feeling of spaciousness is excellent.
The earphones also come with a large carrying case to carry the earphones and both cables. It is a nice detail that is not always found, even in headphones that cost twice as much.
Connectivity
The headphones feature a 3.5mm connection on the right cup and a 6.35mm connection on the left cup. This means that the cables are fully removable, which is excellent for durability. Of course, some excellent quality cables are included. Specifically, 2 cables are included:
- 3.5mm cable: 3-meter long smooth cable that has both minijack connections. It is thick and sturdy. It is ideal for use at home with the Hi-Fi equipment, the amplifier or the computer.
- 3.5mm to 6.35mm cable: coiled cable with a minimum length of 1.5 meters and a maximum length of 3.5 meters.
The 3.5mm to 6.35mm cable has the peculiarity that it can be used in any way:
- Connected to the headset by 3.5mm and computer by 6.35mm
- Connected to the headset by 6.35mm and to a computer by 3.5mm
Of course, it also supports the two simultaneous inputs to listen to two simultaneous audio outputs.
Additionally, the M80s come with sound sharing functionality. That means we can connect the headphones to an audio output, listen to the M80 headphones, and send the sound to other headphones. For example, we can connect the M80 to the mobile (it is recommended to have an amplifier to get a good sound quality) with the double 3.5mm cable and then connect the 6.35mm cable to the M80 to share the audio. To other headphones with the 3.5mm jack.
Sound
The M80 are open-back headphones with a 40mm dynamic driver with a reasonably high impedance (250 Ω). This means that they are challenging to move, and not all home devices will take full advantage of them. On top of that, these headphones have enough sound quality that the manufacturer recommends using a dedicated amp to get the most out of them.
Being a studio headphone, the M80’s basses aren’t meant to color music with bass, but they pack enough punch to pack a punch when the music calls for it. Mind you, they will never draw too much attention and feel natural and true to the mix. It is a neutral tone that remains clear in the sub and mid-bass regions of the timbre. The sound softens a bit more in the mid-bass, adding a touch of warmth.
The mids do their job well, offering a mostly flat and even response across its entire frequency spectrum. There’s some of that warmth coming off the bass in the lower mids, but it’s pretty contained. The mids generally have a reasonably clean sound, and the voices are heard wonderfully; perhaps the male ones are more favored and have a particularly clear timbre in certain regions.
Although the frequency response remains uniform until the treble, it is noticeable that the treble is a little fairer. The frequencies that are heard respond quite well, but it is noted that the treble falls somewhat short compared to more expensive headphones. Even so, for the price they have, they are perfect.
Open-back headphones offer a wide soundstage and an accurate picture of what the mix sounds like. Furthermore, the soundstage can offer enough space between the sound elements to separate each element efficiently.
Conclusion!
The OneOdio Monitor 80 are open, high-impedance headphones that cost less than 100 USD. The headphones are very comfortable, have removable cables and are compatible with 3.5 and 6.35 mm connectors. Its build quality is not bad, but it could be improved, primarily because of the scratching heard when moving the left cup.
As for audio, they have a fairly balanced and natural sound at all frequencies. Perhaps they are a little more limited in the treble, but the level of clarity and balance is still outstanding. Of course, for less than 100 dollars they are one of the best options in terms of pure sound quality, so they are highly recommended for those who want headphones with good sound quality without breaking the bank. Also, from my point of view sight, they present an elegant construction for their price.
