Formatting your Xiaomi mobile can be a very good idea if it is presenting problems or any other situation. The most common problems are always slow in the system, errors, and failures, or poor battery, and a good hard reset to reset your Xiaomi, can be a great way to solve the faults.
You may be experiencing some other more advanced problem and you want to apply a Hard Reset to your Xiaomi (Delete everything and leave it at the factory) because in this tutorial I will explain from the simplest method to the little more advanced methods so that you can flash your Xiaomi in the way that is most convenient for you. Let’s get to work.
Why should you reset your Xiaomi mobile?
Performing a hard reset on your Xiaomi is a very good idea for various reasons or circumstances which I am going to indicate below. Most of the time this is done to improve the performance of the mobile and extend its useful life, but that is not the only reason.
Slowness in the system
It is very likely that on some occasions you have suffered slowness in your Xiaomi device because let me tell you that even the best mobile is not safe from being slow after a long time. This happens mostly due to the accumulation of data in your memory, which being saturated causes the device to be slow.
By applying a factory reset you will be eliminating all unnecessary files, thus leaving the most important things and clearing your memory of junk files.
Failures in updates or modifications
It may be that a failure in an update or modification in the system may be causing a problem in your device, these problems can be solved simply by resetting the Xiaomi mobile to how it came from the factory.
Although the flash in Xiaomi can be a good solution, there are problems that cannot be fixed with a factory reset because they are errors from the same manufacturer of your device, so it can only be fixed through updates by the same. Keep that in mind before starting.
Virus or malware
If you think your mobile has been infected by a virus or malware, a factory reset can very quickly solve your problem. Downloading files or applications from untrustworthy sources may cause your mobile to become infected with malicious software.
If you are a user who likes to download applications that are outside the Play Store or files from web pages, it is recommended that you install one of the best antiviruses for Android that you can get in the Play Store.
Battery problems
A common problem in Xiaomi is battery drain due to software problems. Some applications may be draining your mobile battery even so, without using them. Not only that but many more complicated problems that may be draining your mobile battery in an incredible way.
Are you going to sell it or give it away?
Selling or giving away your mobile with your data still inside it can be very risky for your privacy, so when you go to change mobile, make a backup copy of it first and then reset the old mobile to the factory state. The flash in Xiaomi totally removes all the information, without the possibility of recovering it.
What remains to be done is to restore the data from the old mobile to your new mobile and you will no longer have any problem, so the person who is going to deliver your old mobile will have it as it came from the factory and can configure it to your liking.
Before starting…
Before formatting the Xiaomi, you must take into account some basic factors, but important, since you will erase all the data that is on the mobile and this process cannot be undone. IF you have doubts about any step of the procedure, you can leave your comment to guide you.
Make a backup
As you should already know, resetting your mobile will erase all the data it stores, leaving it as it came from the factory. The best thing you can do to avoid losing your important data is to make a backup. You can do it in several ways, but I am going to explain the simple way step by step:
- Open the Settings app on your Xiaomi.
- Then, go to the section> Additional settings > Backup and reset.
- Tap> Local backups .
- You select all the content you want to protect.
- Finally, click on> Backup.
After following these steps, the backup will begin to be created on your Xiaomi, you just have to wait for the process to finish and voila, you will have your data backed up. Once you do the Hard Reset to your Xiaomi, you can restore this backup and have all the data as you had it previously.
Make sure you also make a backup copy to your WhatsApp, because the Xiaomi settings do not allow you to backup WhatsApp. You will have to do it manually from the application. To be able to do it you must follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp on your Xiaomi.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right.
- Again in> Settings > Chats > Backup .
- Click on ” Save to Google Drive ” and voila, it will begin to be created.
Once everything mentioned is done, you will be ready to format your Xiaomi.
Make sure you have enough battery
In order to start the Xiaomi Hard Reset process, you must make sure you have enough battery since if you do not have enough, serious errors can occur on your mobile.
It is best to have the battery fully charged, or at least above 50%. If you can leave your mobile connected during the process, it can be much better.
Follow the procedure as explained
If you are going to perform a Hard Reset from the recovery menu, you must follow the steps as explained below. The recovery menu is a menu that is installed on the mobile, in which it is possible to carry out activities that cannot be done in the operating system. Basically, this menu, which by its acronym in Spanish means ” Recovery mode ” serves to fix problems with your mobile if it does not start or has more advanced problems.
In this menu, the touch input will not work, so you will have to navigate and select with the physical buttons of the Xiaomi mobile. You must be careful what you select since the processes that come out here cannot be undone. Likewise, the Hard Reset, once it is executed, cannot be undone.
How to reset Xiaomi from the system
The easiest and safest way to format your Xiaomi is to do it from the device’s own settings, to be able to do it you just have to follow these steps:
- Open the settings of your Xiaomi mobile.
- Go to> Additional settings > Backup and reset .
- In the personal data section, tap>Â Factory data reset.
After having followed the previous steps, you will enter the final process of erasing all the data from your Xiaomi, including the system settings, your MI account, application data, and other mobile data.
You will have to authorize the process by entering your password with which you unlock the mobile. Once entered, the process will begin and all existing data on your Xiaomi will be deleted.
Hard Reset on Xiaomi from recovery mode
If the previous step for some reason does not work for you, you can try to reset your Xiaomi in the recovery mode. It is very simple to do, and on MIUI mobiles it can be done in two methods:
Access from the system
The first method is to access the recovery mode from the settings of your mobile, you can do it in the following way:
- Go to settings.
- Head to> About phone > System updates > More options .
- Finally, click>Â Restart to recovery mode.
Your mobile will restart and then enter the recovery mode, where you can do a hard reset. In this mode the screen will not work, so you will have to use the volume +/- buttons, to finally do the Hard reset, you must follow these steps:
- Using the volume keys +/- look for the option called ” Wipe data ” or ” Factory Reset “
- Access it using the on / off-key.
- Finally to confirm.
You wait for the mobile to restart and it will begin to reset the factory, once the mobile is finished it will start to start Android as normal and all the data will have been deleted.
Access using physical buttons
You can also format your Xiaomi from the recovery mode using the physical buttons, in case the previous method does not work for you or for any reason you cannot do it. To do this you must follow these steps:
- Turn off your cell phone.
- Press the Power / Volume + buttons at the same time.
- You do this until the phone vibrates and shows the ” MI ” logo.
- When the logo appears, stop pressing the buttons.
- You will get a menu in Mandarin or English.
- Click on the button above the blue bar on the right side to switch to English.
- When the language has been changed, select> Recovery > Ok.
- In ” Main menu ” select> ” Wipe data “.
- Finally, select> ” Wipe all data “.
When you have done all this process, the mobile will begin to factory reset. This will take a while, but then the operating system will start normally without any data.
If you have a custom recovery (TWRP)
A custom recovery is a tool that facilitates navigation through the recovery mode of mobile phones, but not only that, it also allows Xiaomi to flash files with the .zip extension, thus allowing you to change ROMs or root very easily.
If you have TWRP installed on your mobile and you want to perform a hard reset on Xiaomi, you can do the following:
- Turn off your cell phone.
- Then turn it on by pressing the Power / Volume + keys.
- Select the Recovery option.
- Slide the safety bar.
- Again, click on Wipe Data and confirm by typing the word Yes.
- Finally, the device will start to reboot.
And voila, your Xiaomi mobile will be as it came from the factory and you can start restoring all your data.

This process is similar to reinstalling an operating system or formatting a PC; The difference is that on a PC the process can be the same for almost all models, while on a mobile it can vary by model or manufacturer and even by country.

- Connect your Xiaomi mobile to your computer via USB cable.

- Once you have found it, press>Â Ok.
- In the program, click>Â Refresh.
- With your mobile connected to the computer, you will be able to see it reflected in the program on the COM port.
- At the bottom right, click the checkbox>Â Clean all and lock.
- Finally, click>Â Flash.
When the process of flashing ROM in Xiaomi has finished, you will see the green bar, indicating that the process has been completed successfully.
